One of the Best Decisions I Ever Made
When I entered college, joining a sorority never crossed my mind. I had the idea that sororities were primarily for a solid Instagram feed and fun formals, which weren’t high on my priority list. However, I ended up letting an old friend involved in Greek Life at my college talk me into signing up for recruitment last minute. I figured it wouldn’t hurt. From the moment I walked into Kappa Delta, everything changed.
When I entered the room, I saw that every Kappa Delta was dressed the same. They all wore blue jean skirts, brown sandals and red Kappa Delta T-shirts, but there was such an incredible amount of diversity in the room. There were women majoring in everything from business to education to theater. Some KDs had makeup on and well-done hair, while others were confidently makeup free with their hair in ponytails. The best part to see was how much they all celebrated and loved each other.
When you join a sorority, you are joining a family, and sometimes that can be hard. You’re going to share amazing memories, but you’re also going to disagree sometimes. These are the women you will cry with, laugh with, order cookies with at 3 a.m. because you all procrastinated on your homework (again) and everything in between.
Joining a sorority is not about having an amazing social media page. It gives you some of the most real relationships you will ever experience. My incredible sisters have seen me through some of my best and worst times. They were there to celebrate with me when I received A’s on tests that I studied hard for and when I got leadership positions on campus. They also were the ones who convinced me to move to another country for five months because they knew it would be good for my personal growth. They pushed me into leadership positions that I didn’t feel ready for and supported me when I faced challenges.
A sorority is a group of incredibly diverse women who are all brought together by shared values, and I think that’s the best kind of relationship you could ever have. My time in Kappa Delta has been challenging, new and supportive every single day, and that is why joining a sorority has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
