Staying Healthy in 2016; Mind, Body and Soul.

post-default

Did you make a new year’s resolution to get healthy this year? Have you stuck to it? If you have, that’s great! Keep it up. If not, who says you need to wait for a new year to start again? As Kappa Deltas, we are continuously striving for that which is honorable, beautiful and highest. To me, that means working on being the best version of myself for all of the wonderful people in my life. Part of that is taking action to stay healthy! As a recent graduate, I know how hard it is at times to eat healthy, be active and take time to de-stress. It is equally as hard to maintain a healthy lifestyle in the professional world. For that reason, here are some tips to keep you going! Let’s make 2016 the healthiest year yet!

Mind

  • Let yourself rest. Getting enough sleep is important for your mind and your body. Set a bedtime and do your best to stick to it.
  • Take a mental break. Give yourself time to relax and not be engaged in an activity. Working sun up to sun down every day will drain your energy. It’s okay to take time to do nothing.

Body

  • Drink more water! Health professionals recommend eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day. Are you not much of a water drinker? Take baby steps. Challenge yourself to drink three more glasses of water than you normally do.
  • Exercise for at least 30 mins. This doesn’t mean you have to go to the gym! Switch your exercise up from time to time so you don’t get bored. Take a walk, sign up for a 5K, join an intramural team or take a new workout class! Invite your sisters to join you. You’ll find it’s a lot more fun to be active with a friend by your side.
  • Plan your meals. Meal planning and preparation is great for a woman on the go. Preparing your meals for the week ahead will help you through those busy days when you don’t have time to cook a healthy meal.

Soul

  • Unplug and spend time offline. This one is hard for me. Working in communications and being an avid social media user in my personal life, it’s hard to “unplug” at the end of the day. Make it a goal to have real life conversations throughout the day. Have lunch with a friend, call your mom or catch up with a sister you haven’t seen in a while. It’s easy to get caught up in the latest social media buzz but don’t forget to take time for the important relationships in your life.
  • Volunteer. Whether you are still in college or have graduated, try to make giving back to your community a lifelong goal! You will feel great knowing you have helped others in need.

When you feel great about yourself, you radiate confidence and are able to build confidence in others! What could be better than that? While you’re working hard towards your professional and personal goals, don’t forget to take care of yourself along the way. You only have one life to live, make it a great one!
