One recent campus proposed a requirement that greek housing hire professional safety inspectors to inspect the house and report any safety violations. Knowing the cost of this unbudgeted new expense, house corporations were looking for an alternative that would satisfy the university.

Kappa Delta’s insurance agent, MJ Insurance, publishes a “Chapter House Self-Inspection Report” which was provided to the university administration. The university administration informally agreed that if house corporations perform this self inspection, that they would forego requiring a professional inspection.

If your university is considering a requirement that house corporations hire professional safety inspectors, please consult the director of chapter housing at chapterhousing@kappadelta.org. We can try and get the requirement eliminated by indicating that the sorority houses on the campus will use this already approved self-inspection report. Worth a try to eliminate an unnecessary expense! The report is available at www.mjinsurance.com and click on Resources and Library. Put self-inspection in the search field and you will find this report.

Conducting regular and thorough safety inspections is one of the most important things you can do to provide a safe environment and reduce liability and maintenance costs by catching situations early before they become problems.
