Through the national campaign, Pinwheels for Prevention®, Prevent Child Abuse America is changing the way our nation thinks about prevention, focusing on community activities and public policies that prioritize prevention right from the start to make sure child abuse and neglect never occur. Like the motion it takes to move the pinwheel, Kappa Delta chapters and alumnae groups can be the force behind the national movement we are building.

In this brief implementation kit, we are happy to illustrate the many ways Kappa Delta chapters and alumnae associations can bring this growing national movement to college campuses and communities nationwide. With more than 1.3 million pinwheels sold since April 2008 and campaign activity in at least 40 states, we’re off to a strong start. We can do even more with your help! To learn more about the campaign, we encourage you to see the attached one-page overview and visit the campaign web site at www.pinwheelsforprevention.org.

For nearly 30 years, Kappa Delta has been our partner in prevention. Through this effort, we can take the partnership to whole new levels. As always, Prevent Child Abuse America offers its deepest appreciation for Kappa Delta’s unending commitment to and most generous support of our mission to prevent the abuse and neglect of our nation’s children.

Implementation:

As in the past two years, Kappa Delta chapters and alumnae groups have the opportunity to sell pinwheels on campus and/or around town to benefit Prevent Child Abuse America. To help achieve the successful implementation of the campaign on your campus or in your community, we would like to provide the following suggestions.

1. Shamrock Events

The obvious and perhaps easiest way to sell pinwheels on campus or in your community would be to integrate them into the activities you already have planned for this year’s Shamrock Events. If you decide to go this route, some ideas for making the most of this effort would include:

  • Incorporate the pinwheels in any event promotion you conduct, highlighting the fact that this is part of a highly successful and growing national campaign where nearly more than 1.3 million pinwheels have been displayed since April 2008.
  • Sell pinwheels to attendees at your event(s), separate from any admission you may charge. You are welcome to sell the pinwheels for $1.00 each or for any greater amount you see fit.
  • Plant the pinwheels in a “pinwheel garden” in conjunction with your event and/or in a public place on your campus, such as outside your student union or in front of your sorority’s house. (See the attached pictures for examples of pinwheel gardens planted by Prevent Child Abuse America chapters.) To accompany your pinwheel gardens, please feel free to create signs using the attached campaign logo and sample language
  • Encourage fellow students, friends, co-workers and neighbors to take a stand for healthy child development and child abuse prevention by purchasing a pinwheel to display on their own or plant as part of your pinwheel garden.
  • Set-up your pinwheels sales as a “challenge” among members for who sells the most pinwheels, or among other student organizations who buys and displays the most. Award a prize to the winner, such as a gift certificate to a local restaurant or tickets to an event.

2. Additional Ideas

In addition to selling pinwheels as part of your Shamrock Events, you may consider additional ways to promote and sell pinwheels on campus. Some ideas would include:

  • Participate in, and selling pinwheels at, other campus or community events
  • Set-up tables in your student union, dorms or other popular campus/community areas
  • Approach local businesses to sell pinwheels and/or sponsor your pinwheels garden
  • Ask your local and/or student newspapers to promote the pinwheels
  • Invite faculty or university departments and local officials to support this campaign
  • Approach your school’s athletic department to ask if you can sell pinwheels at sporting or other campus events

Placing Your Orders

To order pinwheels for your chapter, please follow the instructions below.  Your chapter will not be charged for the order or for shipping and handling.  You will simply be asked to submit the funds raised from your pinwheels sales (separate from your other fundraising activities, see accounting instructions below), and any unsold pinwheels, to Prevent Child Abuse America after your events have been completed.  For example, if you order 384 pinwheels (the pinwheels come 192 per case), you’ll be expected to send in $384, or if you don’t sell all pinwheels, the total of your pinwheel sales plus any remaining unsold pinwheels.

It’s important that Prevent Child Abuse America receive all unsold pinwheels so it can use them for other opportunities.

Instructions:

1.   To place your pinwheels order, visit http://www.americanbus.com/newaces.

2.   Enter User ID: pca38125.3.   Enter Password: tn38125.

4.   Once in the site, click on Pinwheels.

5.   Enter the number of cases of pinwheels (192 pinwheels/case) you need and click “Add to Cart.”  Order the amount you believe you can reasonably sell.  Better to run out than have too many.

6.   You’ll next see the “Shopping Cart.”  Like other e-stores, here you’ll be able to cancel your order, change your order or proceed with your order.

7.   You’ll then be taken to the Purchase Order form:

•   Since Prevent Child Abuse America is providing your pinwheels, our address has been pre-populated at left.

•   On the right side you’ll be asked to provide your chapter’s name, street address (no PO boxes please), city, state, zip, a contact name and email address.

•   Please note the special accounting instructions in red.  This is very important.

•   In the space provided toward the bottom, please provide any special delivery instructions to ensure your pinwheels are delivered where you need them.

•   Once you’ve completed all fields, press “Continue Checkout.”

8.   You’ll then be taken to the Verification page where you can make sure you have entered the right quantity of pinwheels and all shipping information.

9.   If everything is correct, press “Order Now.”

10.   You will receive a confirmation page upon placing your order.  The pinwheels will be shipped by ground service and arrive within a few days of placing your order.

Accounting

It is very important to follow these instructions carefully.

1.   All funds raised from the sale of pinwheels must be accounted for separately and sent to

Prevent Child Abuse America directly at: Prevent Child Abuse America

Attn: Matt Feldman

228 S. Wabash Avenue10th Floor

Chicago, IL 60604

When sending in the funds raised from your pinwheels sales, make the check out to Prevent Child Abuse America and be sure to indicate your chapter and school.

2.   It is also important to send any unsold pinwheels back to Prevent Child Abuse America at the address above so they can be re-used.

3.   Continue to submit 20% of funds raised from your Shamrock Events, and your Shamrock Event final report, to Kappa Delta National Headquarters, and allocate 80% to the local organization working in the prevention of child abuse you’ve chosen to support.  We hope you will consider the state chapter of Prevent Child Abuse America to enjoy this 80%.

To provide an example of how this should work, if your chapter raises $5,000 at your Shamrock Event, send $1,000 to Kappa Delta National Headquarters and $4,000 to the local charity of your choice.  In addition, if your chapter sells 384 pinwheels, be sure to account for that cost and income in your Final Report to Kappa Delta National Headquarters and send the $384 check directly to Prevent Child Abuse America at the address above.
