Orthopaedic Research Internships Available for KDs

Calling all Kappa Delta collegians interested in a career in medicine and medical research! This is your chance to intern at one of the leading orthopaedic research centers in the country.

Karen Hasty, PhD, (Alpha Epsilon-Tennessee) an acclaimed professor of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis is offering the opportunity for four Kappa Delta collegians to serve as summer interns. Interns will work in an orthopaedic research laboratory 9AM-5PM daily under the supervision of trained research personnel at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Additionally, they will participate in a weekly research data conference and journal club and will attend orthopaedic training conferences at the Campbell Clinic.

This rewarding experience lasts for five weeks, with a start date on June 27, 2012 lasting through August 3. Interns will stay without cost at the Kappa Delta National Headquarters, located in Memphis, Tenn. The Foundation Headquarters offers an upstairs residence with several bedrooms and a kitchen. The Kappa Delta Foundation is pleased to offer this opportunity, especially given KD’s long-standing support of orthopaedic research through the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. A stipend of $1,000 will be offered.

Abigail Calametti, Sigma Lambda-Auburn University
Shelby Kozlowski, Eta Eta-Northern Kentucky University

If interested, please send Professor Hasty a short paragraph describing how this experience would fit into your career goals and the college that you are attending. Please also include your undergraduate major, your present level of college and your overall GPA. Please note science courses that you have taken and the grade that you received. Molecular biology, cell biology, genetics anatomy or histology, microbiology, zoology, chemistry, biochemistry or biomedical engineering majors are encouraged. Applications are reviewed by funded researchers who serve as mentors in this program and are selected based on their goals and a background match with existing research programs.
