As the weather gets warmer and the semester is coming to an end, our collegiate residents are not as diligent as they should be about keeping the entry doors closed and locked. Please remind them that this is a huge safety concern and that they should be sure the door closes and locks behind them whenever entering and exiting.

Recently, a university instructed its security personnel to do “door checks” of the fraternity and sorority housing on campus. At varying times during the late evening and early morning hours, security personnel would walk up to a door and test it to see if it was locked. It was truly scary to see how many doors were unlocked at this time of the night. This is a point that cannot be emphasized too much with the collegians and the house directors. Inform your house directors that if a door is malfunctioning and not closing and locking properly, it must be fixed immediately—no questions about it!
